Alleghany County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina. It was built in 1933, and is a two-story, H-shaped Classical Revival style brick building. The front façade features a tetrastyle Tuscan order portico. Robert L. Doughton
Robert Lee “Bob” Doughton (November 7, 1863 – October 1, 1954), of Alleghany County, North Carolina, sometimes known as “Farmer Bob“, was a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina for 42 consecutive years (1911–1953). A Democrat originally from Laurel Springs, North Carolina, he was the Dean of the United States House of Representatives for his last few months in Congress. He is the longest-serving member ever of the United States House of Representatives from the state of North Carolina. In the 1930s Doughton was a key player in the creation of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the passage of the Social Security Act. Wikipedia
Boone Trail Highway
Between 1913 and 1938, Joseph Hampton Rich, a resident of Mocksville, North Carolina, placed 358 metal tablets between Virginia Beach, Virginia and San Francisco, California, in honour of Daniel Boone and his travels. Although many of the tablets are associated with locations visited by Boone, many were simply placed wherever Rich could collect the necessary donations from schools and communities to erect a monument. He established the Boone Trail Highway Association to further his project. From the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s, the Association published a newsletter detailing the efforts to install new monuments.
